Sailboat, Catamaran or Yacht: Which is the Perfect Boat for Your Charter in Ibiza and Formentera?

It's the question we get asked most frequently at MobyDick Boats. Summer arrives, the excitement of spending a day sailing the turquoise waters of Ibiza and Formentera is already on your mind, and then the doubt arises: sailboat, catamaran, or yacht? Three words that hide completely different worlds, three experiences that vary radically depending on who you are and what you choose each one for.

The correct answer doesn't exist. Or rather, it exists differently for each person. A group of friends celebrating a birthday doesn't need the same thing as a couple on their honeymoon or a family with young children. A client who wants to feel the wind and truly sail isn't looking for the same thing as someone who prioritises space, luxury and arriving quickly at the best coves.

This article has one single objective: that when you finish reading it, you will have the perfect answer for yourself.

The Sailboat: Sailing in its Purest Form

The sailboat is the oldest and, for many, the most authentic type of vessel. Moving propelled solely by the wind, with no engine noise, feeling the hull tilt as you tack and the sound of the sails tightening is an experience no other vessel can offer. It's not just transport: it's a way of connecting with the sea.

What's the experience like on board a sailing boat?

The sailboat has a distinct personality. Its monohull – a single hull that cuts through the water – gives it dynamic behaviour where every wave, every change of wind, every manoeuvre is felt. There is a certain side tilt (heeling) when sailing that enthusiasts find exciting and that novices may find surprising the first time.

The onboard space is more limited than on an equivalent-sized catamaran, but this isn't necessarily a problem: it creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and closeness among the crew. Many of our clients who come on sailing holidays tell us that it's the option that best connects the group with each other and with the sea.

Cabins on a 40-50 ft (12-15 metre) charter sailing yacht typically number 3-4, each with its own heads. The central saloon, known as the dinette, is the social heart of the vessel. The exterior seating area (the cockpit) is where most of the time is spent while sailing.

Advantages of a sailing yacht for a charter in Ibiza

Access to small coves. The draft (depth needed by the boat underwater) of a sailing boat is usually less than that of a motor yacht of equivalent size, and its narrower beam (width) allows it to enter coves where other vessels cannot. In Ibiza and Formentera, where some of the best coves are small and difficult to access, this is a real advantage.

The most authentic experience. If what you're looking for is to truly sail, to feel the sea and experience life at sea in its fullest, then a sailboat is your vessel. There's nothing comparable to switching off the engine, hoisting the sails, and crossing the channel to Formentera with the westerly wind.

Energy efficiency and lower pollution. The sailing yacht primarily sails with the wind. The engine is used for manoeuvring in port and during calms, but the majority of the sailing is done under sail. For those more environmentally conscious, this is an important advantage in an ecosystem as sensitive as that of the Pitiusas.

Price. When comparing boats of the same length, a monohull sailboat is generally more economical than a catamaran. If budget is a consideration, the monohull offers the best value for money in the world of nautical chartering.

Who is the sailboat ideal for?

The sailboat is perfect for couples, for groups of friends passionate about the sea, for those who want to learn to sail or for travellers looking for an authentic connection with the Mediterranean. It is also the best option for those who are planning a multi-day trip and want to experience island hopping.

If you have small children and stability is a priority, or if you are looking for maximum deck space for a large group, then a catamaran might be a better option.

The Catamaran: Space, Stability and Social Comfort

The catamaran has revolutionised the world of nautical chartering in the last two decades. Its growth in popularity is unstoppable: today it is the most rented vessel in the Mediterranean, and there are very specific reasons for this.

What is the experience like on board a catamaran?

The first sensation upon boarding a catamaran is one of space. Its two parallel hulls create an enormous deck platform, with an aft deck that, in some models, can accommodate a dining table for ten people and a sunbathing area with several loungers. It is literally a floating home.

Stability is another differentiating factor. By having two hulls instead of one, the catamaran does not heel (lean) when sailing. This makes it particularly recommended for people who suffer from seasickness, for young children, and for those who prioritise comfort over a more technical sailing experience.

Inside each hull are separate cabins and bathrooms. On a standard 40-foot charter catamaran, there are four double cabins (two in each hull) with their respective bathrooms, allowing a group of eight people to travel with complete comfort and privacy. The central lounge, raised above the two hulls, offers 360-degree panoramic views.

Advantages of a catamaran for a charter in Ibiza

Unrivalled space. No other vessel of equivalent length offers so much usable deck space. The catamaran's aft deck is the perfect spot for dining, sunbathing, snorkelling, dancing or simply being. For large groups, the catamaran is the only option that allows everyone to be together without discomfort.

Total stability. Catamaran sailing is flat. There is no heeling, no significant rocking. Those who have never sailed and fear seasickness can rest assured: the catamaran is, of all sailing vessels, the most stable and comfortable.

Privacy by groups. Two groups of friends travelling together, a family with two couples, a work group wanting to combine leisure and networking: the catamaran allows each subgroup to have its own space. The cabins in each hull offer a natural separation that a monohull sailboat cannot provide.

Reduced draught. Catamarans have a very shallow draught thanks to their two narrow hulls. This allows them to anchor in very shallow waters, reaching sandy areas where the bottom barely covers the hulls and the water colour is an unreal turquoise.

Deck entertainment. The catamaran's deck space turns any anchorage into an impromptu party, a sunset dinner, or a morning yoga session with the sea as your only horizon. For those who want the boat to be both the transport and the destination, the catamaran is the answer.

Disadvantages of a catamaran

Honesty is part of our service. The catamaran has some disadvantages worth knowing about:

Premium price. A catamaran always costs more than a monohull of the same length, whether you’re buying or hiring. Chartering a catamaran in Ibiza can be 30–50% more expensive than chartering a similar monohull.

Reduced manoeuvrability. Its width makes it less agile in small harbours and coves. In busy anchorages, the catamaran needs more manoeuvring space.

Less of a nautical feel. For sailing purists, the catamaran is too static, too comfortable. It doesn't heel, you don't feel the wind in the same way, there's not that excitement of a monohull sailing upwind. If what you're looking for is real sailing, then a monohull is more satisfying.

Who is the catamaran ideal for?

The catamaran is perfect for families with children, large groups of friends (6-10 people), people who suffer from seasickness, those who prioritise space and comfort, or those who want the boat to be the setting for a memorable social experience. It is also the best option for day trips without sleeping on board, where deck space is the most important factor.

The Motor Yacht: Speed, Luxury and Efficiency

The motor yacht occupies a different space in the charter ecosystem. It is not a sailing vessel: it moves exclusively by engines, which gives it a much superior speed and a range of movement that sailing boats and catamarans cannot match.

What is the experience like on board a motor yacht?

The motor yacht is synonymous with luxury and power. Its lines are more aggressive, more modern, more aspirational. On board, the level of finishes is usually superior to that of sailing vessels: high-quality materials, audio and video equipment, professional galley, more spacious relaxation areas.

Speed is the big differentiator. A motor yacht can cross the Ibiza-Formentera channel in 20 minutes. It can get you from Ibiza port to the coves in the north of the island in less than an hour. This speed allows for more ambitious itineraries to be designed, visiting more places in a day, or simply enjoying the adrenaline rush of sailing at full speed with the salty spray in your face.

Fuel consumption is high, and the engine noise is constant when underway. When anchored, however, the motor yacht offers an exceptional aft swim platform for swimming, paddleboarding, or watersports.

Advantages of a motor yacht for a charter in Ibiza

Speed and freedom of movement. With a motor yacht, time ceases to be a limiting factor. You can set off later, go further, change your plans on the go. The flexibility that speed provides is incomparable.

Comfort and luxury. Charter motor yachts usually have superior finishes and more leisure equipment than sailing vessels. If you want the highest level of comfort, a motor yacht is your choice.

Ideal for groups that prioritise stopping over navigating. If your priority is to reach the best coves as quickly as possible, swim, eat well on board and enjoy the views, a motor yacht will get you where you want to go in the shortest time.

Water sports. Motor yachts are generally better equipped for activities such as water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, or paddleboarding, as their engines allow for controlled and precise speeds.

Who is the motor yacht ideal for?

The motor yacht is perfect for groups who want to combine speed, luxury and flexibility. It is the usual choice for special events, VIP celebrations, corporate days out or any occasion where visual impact and a premium experience are a priority. It is also ideal for clients with limited time who want to maximise the number of places visited.

With or Without Pattern? The Other Big Decision

Beyond the type of boat, there is another fundamental decision to make: rent the boat with a skipper (professional captain) or without a skipper (if you have a nautical licence)?

Hire with an experienced instructor. This is the most popular option among MobyDick Boats clients, and the most recommended for those without experience or a nautical qualification. A professional skipper not only sails the boat; they know the best coves of the season, the quietest anchorages, the most authentic restaurants accessible by sea, the weather forecasts, and all the tricks that turn a nice excursion into a memorable experience. In short, they are a local guide of the sea.

Rental without a pattern. If you have the PER (Recreational Boat Skipper) or an equivalent qualification and actual sailing experience, bareboat charter gives you the complete freedom to set your own pace, your own stops, and your own itinerary. It's a more adventurous and intimate experience, especially for couples or small groups of sailing friends.

At MobyDick Boats, we offer both options. Tell us your profile and we'll help you decide.

The Season Matters: When to Book and What to Expect

May and June: The shoulder season is, for many, the ideal time. The coves are less crowded, the weather is perfect (between 22 and 28 degrees), the water is already warm, and there's greater availability of boats. It's the season locals recommend.

July and August: The high season. The days are the longest and hottest of the year, the island's energy is at its peak, and aquatic parties and events multiply. Demand for boats is at its maximum, so it's advisable to book weeks in advance. The coves are more crowded, but the overall experience is unparalleled.

September and October: The post-season, which in Ibiza and Formentera is spectacular. The sea retains the summer temperature, the coves regain their space, prices drop and the island returns to its more tranquil pace. For those who can travel outside of August, September in Ibiza is a revelation.
